TaxFix

It all depends on how much you earn.

If you earn below the tax free allowance (currently £6,475) you should pay no tax, if you do, you can claim it back.

The basic rate of tax is at 20% and is the amount paid by people earning between £0-£37,400.

The higher rate of tax is at 40% and is paid on any earnings between £37,401-£150,000

The additional rate of income tax is paid at the rate of 50% and is paid on all earnings above £150,000

Supposing someone earned above the £6,475, around £7,000, but they have been getting taxed from before they went above £6.475, could they claim that tax back but obviously not the tax you payed after that point?

Just after some advice. Started a new job after being made redundant. Started 02/04/2012. Only get £1,250 before tax and NI deductions but came out with £1,068.32? Can this be correct as it appears to not even be 20% tax? I have checked my tax code and it is correct? Any advice would be appreciated.

Kate, 20% of 1250 is 250…so I would say if you are being paid monthly, that is more than right!
