My wife has worked for the same company since she came to the UK from South Africa in Ocotber 2007. In her first tax year (Dec07-Apr08) she will have earned around 4k (less than her tax-free allowance of £6,475). In her 2nd year she earned around 12k. In the last 11 month she has earned less than 5k (again less than her tax-free allowance of £6,475).

You can claim back all of your tax if you earn below the tax free allowance every year.

If you earn above the tax free allowance you still make be eligible for a tax rebate but you will probably not get 100% of the amount paid in tax during the year.

As your wife is leaving the UK it will also increase the likelihood of a larger tax refund.
