Often if you start a new job your employer may put you on an emergency tax code and as a result you can overpay tax.
Do not worry, you can claim back any overpayment of tax. The bad news is that you need to wait until the end of the tax year to make your claim when you get your P60.
To avoid being put on an emergency tax code you should give your employer your P45 when you start working.
If you do not want to give your employer your P45 as you want to keep your previous income confidential, then you can send your P45 to your local tax office. This may take longer though and could result in your being on an emergency tax code for a short while.
