There are a number of reasons why you could be due a tax refund including:

1. Changing jobs
2. Being on an emergency tax code
3. Working as a student and earning below the tax free allowance
4. Leaving the UK

You can check to see if you are due a tax refund by looking at your P60 which you should get in April and typing your total income and tax for the year into our tax refund calculator:

I have recently been informed that I have to pay a registration and a yearly retention fee to allow me to continue working as a Pharmacy Technician. I work part time in a hospital pharmacy within the NHS. These fees are going to cost me around £500 by Nov 2010, money that I really can not afford to pay. Am I able to get any help with these costs? I am a single parent and am also in receipt of Working Family Tax Credit. Please help!

I am 61 years of age and working full time, I have a private pension of 425 net per month and do not claim my state pension. My basic ssalary is 16,200 per annum and my tax code is 25T – my private pension is tax free and I think I am paying too much tax on my salary.

ray: If your only income between April 6th 2009 and April 5th 2010 was £3932 in income and £946 in JSA then you will be able to claim back all of your tax of £478 as you earned below the tax free allowance.

jackie: Did you give your employer a P45. This could be why you are on an emergency tax code. If you do not have your you can use a P46 instead.

At the end of the tax year (April 5th) you will be able to claim a tax refund for any overpayment of tax.
