I am a health service nurse and required to launder my uniforms in my own home using a wash cycle temperature minimun of 60c.

We are also advised to tumble dry our uniforms.I am advised that the electricity costs for running a washing machine and tumbler dryer for each cycle is approx £2.00.I attend for work on approximately 245 shifts per year and am required to wear a fresh full uniform on every shift. This advice is provided by the hospitals Infection Control experts as the best method of minimising the risks of continued contaminationof uniforms and thus optimising hospital infection control. The hospital does provide some laundry services for a proportion of the staff, but not for all. My qustion is does this qualify for any tax relief?.

TaxFix

The Inland Revenue will decide on the amount that you can claim and if you are eligible based on your job and uniform.

If you wash your work uniform at home then you can claim a refund so long as there are no facilities at your work to do the washing.

All you need to do is write to your local tax office, explaining the situation and you can even back date it a maximum of 6 years.
Here is a template letter you can use:
