It is not possible to claim for regular work clothes, like a suit and shirt.

You can claim for clothes that wouldn’t normally be worn outside of work, like specialist clothing or clothes with your company logo on.

Also HMRC states that you can only claim if there are no facilities at your work to do the washing.

All you need to do is write to your local tax office, explaining the situation and you can even back date it a maximum of 6 years.
Here is a template letter you can use:

Dear HMRC,

RE: Washing Expenses

I work for -EMPLOYERS NAME- and have been employed their since -START DATE- . I am required to wash my work uniform which is given to me by employer and they do not have any washing facilities on site.
I would like to claim this expense from the above date. Your assistance is greatly appreciated.

Yours Faithfully

Can i claim mileage allowance if i claim for the running costs of a vehicle ie petrol, insurance etc.

I have noticed that i would get a better tax relief for mileage allowance rather than claiming the running costs if this is the case?

Hi Grace
Ordinary clothes which meet the dress code but could be worn outside of your employment (eg a suit, smart skirt & blouse etc) are not eligible for the rebate however anything which is a distinct uniform (eg nurse’s uniform) or which bears a corporate logo is eligible. Hope this helps.
