This is one of the most common questions that we get asked at Tax Fix. This article will help answer that question for you:
When will I get my tax refund?
You need to apply to get a tax refund, you will not get them automatically. You can apply for previous years tax refunds at any time. For the current tax year, you will need to wait until the year is over in April before you can claim a tax refund.
Once you apply refunds usually take between 4-6 weeks to processed and will depend on the back log with your tax office.
How can I calculate my tax refund?
At the end of the tax year you should be given a P60 from your employer. When you have this all you need to do is input your total income and total tax into our tax rebate calculator
Press on the ‘calculate’ button and it will let you know if you are due a tax rebate.
Do tax rebates expire?
Yes, that’s why we recommend that you apply for them as soon as possible. The current expiry date is 6 years but this will be changing shortly.

Porchy: Rebates usually take between 4- 8 weeks for the Inland Revenue to process. Sometimes it can take longer if there are back logs with tax offices, this can often happen during peak times, such as the end of the tax year.

Apparently my tax refund was paid to my accountant as my agent 5 months ago (according to the tax office). I have contacted him several times during this period and he has told me he has not received it. What should I do if he does not pay it or won’t return my calls?

Thank you for your response to my question but will HMRC still issue me a cheque if my accountant has actually had the money but it just sitting on it (or has used it to pay his bills)?

Mrs Jones: It is unlikely they will reissue a cheque that has been cashed. If your accountant is keeping money that is your, you should contact him first and write a letter detailing your concern, if this does not work you can contact his accounting body.

my partner worked from before the start of the tax year april 2010 until the middle of july when he lost his job. He then signed onto income based jobseekers allowance until April 26th 2011. Whilst employed he paid £731 tax. Will he be able to get a refund of the total amount? Also, who does he have to claim it from? HMRC or the Job Centre? He hasn’t received a p60 as yet, although we have been told that there is a p60u in the post from the job centre. Any help please?

Hi i worked from june 2011 until december 2011, and started again in march 2012. I know i’m entitled to a tax rebate, my employer deals with hm revenue and Customs, (PAYE), do i complete a form, or will i recieve my tax rebate automatically, and whne should i expect it?
