How to Check Your P60 for a Tax Refund
Anyone working in the UK will shortly be receiving their P60. Now is the perfect time to check if you might have overpaid tax and be due a tax refund from the government. Follow the instructions in the article below to find out how to check if you could be due a refund.
- What is a P60 form?
- When will I receive my P60?
- How can I check if I am due a tax rebate from my P60?
- How do I get a replacement P60?
A P60 is a tax document that you receive at the end of the tax year from your employer. Your P60 form will show how much you have paid in tax during the year and also how much you have earned. It will also contain other information including your tax code and PAYE reference number.
Your employer should give you your P60 within 2 weeks of the end of the tax year (April 5th). If you do not recieve your P60 before June, you should contact the HR department of your company, or your boss directly. Your employer is required by law to provide you with a P60.
How Can I check if I am due a tax rebate from my P60?
On your P60 there should be two boxes which highlight the pay and tax deducted for the year, as shown in the diagram opposite. Write down these two numbers, and input them into our tax rebate calculator and press the ‘calculate’ button. Make sure that you have selected the correct tax year, and you will then be told if you are due a tax rebate.
How do I get a replacement P60?
If you need a copy of your P60 because you have lost it or were not given one you can get a replacement that will be accepted by the Inland Revenue. You need to write to your employer and ask for a ‘Statement of earnings’ on company headed paper. Your employer is required by law to provide this information and the Inland Revenue will accept it if you are applying for a tax refund.

Hi Karen,
Yes the total earnings on the P60 and your total gross earnings YTD on your wage slip should be the same.

I have a question…I was working this year for more then 1 company but I only got a P60 from one…what do I do? I got P45 from this another works.
admin - Wednesday, April 28th, 2010
Were you working two jobs at the same time or did you finish working one job and then start another? You should only get a P60 if you are working for a company at the end of the tax year (5th April). When you finish working for a company you will be given a P45. You can use the P45 to claim a tax refund.

I have a question.
I have not claimed tax refund for last year, can I still claim now? For example I worked from January 2009 until June 2009 and then I went travelling, can I still claim for tax refund? To what year does the tax refund apply?
Thanks for any clarification
TaxFix - Monday, May 3rd, 2010
Hi Francesca,
Yes you can claim now, the deadline is 6 years, but this is shortly being reduced so we do not suggest that you wait. You would be able to apply for two tax years as your employment straddles two tax years. The 2008/2009 tax year and the 2009/2010 tax year.
You can claim your tax refund by going to:

Im currently working for a company that claims they have lost our P60s in the post what does this mean and where does it leave me if they fall into the wrong hands!
TaxFix - Wednesday, May 5th, 2010
Hi Robert,
If your company or you can not find a P60 it is quite easy to get an accepted replacement. All you need to do is write to your employer and ask for a ‘statement of earnings’ on company headed paper for the years that you worked for them. A statement of earnings is considered an acceptable replacement for a P60 when applying for a tax rebate from the Inland Revenue. Hi there
I have an outstanding Student Loan and when I changed jobs, my P60 only stated Student Loan from my current employer. Do I have to go back to my old job to get another P60 so I can show my student loan company payment was made?
TaxFix - Friday, May 7th, 2010
Hi Ellie,
Is there a reason that you need to proof that your P60 shows student loan deductions. You should be able to get proof from the student loan company who should have a record of any payment made. Your emloyer should also have a record and this should correspond with your pay cheque deductions. Your employer can supply a statment of earnings with this information on if you require.
Ellie - Friday, May 7th, 2010
Thank You for your speedy response.
For some reason the student loan company has no record payment was made…only proof I have are my payslips.
In this case, can I go back to an employer where I paid towards my student loan back in 2004 OR can the tax office deal with all my enquiries?
TaxFix - Friday, May 7th, 2010
Hi Ellie,
No problem.
I would contact your employer and ask for a statement of earnings for the last 6 years with breakdowns of tax and student loan deductions, on company headed paper. They are required under the Data Protection Act to keep this information for 6 years and you can then provide this proof to the Student Loan Company.
I hope this helps.

Hi Aaron,
Can you ask your payroll department to confirm your wage and compare it to your monthly or weekly wage slip to see how it compares?

Is it possible to have your rebate sent to you as a cheque in the post? My boyfriend had one a few years ago in his wages but it would be better for us a cheque this time.
TaxFix - Monday, May 10th, 2010
Usually refunds are sent via cheque or direct transfer into your account.
Chris W - Wednesday, May 12th, 2010
Hi there
On my P60 form for tax year 2009/10 the amount shown that i have earned, is less that what i have ACTUALLY earned if i add all my payslips up together.
Is the amount i have earned on the P60, less the first 6480.00 that i earn tax free?
TaxFix - Thursday, May 13th, 2010
Hi Chris,
If you earn less than £6,475 you can claim back any tax that you have paid.
Are you sure you are adding your income up correctly from your payslips? It should be all income from 6th April 2009 until 5th April 2010. Your payslip might overlap the tax year and this could cause the difference.

Hi there can we get tax refund if our total for the year pay has got the star mark ?
TaxFix - Sunday, May 16th, 2010
Hi Nelly,
It will depend on how much you earn and the amount that you paid in tax.
If you note the figure for both your wages and your tax for the year and input them into our tax rebate calculator, it will tell you if you are due a tax refund:

TaxFix - Monday, May 17th, 2010

Hi, I got my P60 form and the gross income and tax paid are incorrect. the amount does not match when I add all my payslips and the amount is the P60 are less than what should be. It means the company made a mistake in my P60 form. I will contact the company to clarify the situation but I would like to know in this situarion when the P60 submitted by the company is incorrect do they have an obligation to re-sent the correct information to inland revenue and myself right? Otherwise what is the correct procedure?
Thanks!
TaxFix - Monday, May 24th, 2010
Dilma: Yes, if the company has send you incorrect information, they are obligated under the Data Protection Act to correct any mistakes.

In the tax year 2009/10 I worked the first 9 months in one permanent job and recieved a p45, had a month off and then finished the same year in a contractor role in another job. My P60 does not make any reference to my first employment income or tax paid. Is this a mistake? and if so how do you think it could have happened? Which form do I use to do my return? Will the HM revenue have the correct amounts?
Thanks for your help!
TaxFix - Thursday, May 27th, 2010
Katherine: Do you still have your P45 from the first job? The P45 will show how much you earned and how much you paid in tax for that job, combined with your P60, it will show your total for the year.

hi.. i found out the tax ducducted from my p60 form was not the same as the total ducducted amount ( after i added up all ducduction from each payment slips)
why is that?
can i get the difference back as tax rebate?
do i get the full refund?
TaxFix - Saturday, May 29th, 2010
Ken: Did you just add the income tax deductions (not NI or any other deductions)? To find out if you are due a tax rebate, input your total tax for the year, from your P60 and total income (also from your P60) into our tax rebate calculator to see if you are due a rebate.
Lou - Sunday, June 6th, 2010
Hi, During a recent call to Tax office, I was told that I’d overpaid my tax since 2004! I received a letter from HM revenue stating that my previous years overpayment amounted to £1851. This was added onto my personal allowance for this tax year. However, i called tax office to inform them that this was of no use to me as I am currently on statutory maternity pay and will not earn the personal allowance amount of £8626 in this tax year. They have now adjusted my personal allowance back to £6775 and i have just received a tax rebate cheque for £278 for tax year 2008-2009. Am i still entitled to the overpaid amount from 2004? If so, why was this not accounted for in the cheque i received? Will I still get a refund?
Thanks for your help!
TaxFix - Monday, June 7th, 2010
Lou: I would contact your tax office, and ask why they have not sent the full tax refund.

Hi, I have my P60 and it states that I been paid £124.88 in Statutory Paternity Pay. My employer then deducted this Paternity pay from my wages as they stated I had not been with the Company long enough to be entitled to it. How do I go about chasing this up as I feel I may have had money taken off me when it shouldn’t have been. Also, will a Statutory Paternity Payment affect my Tax rate?

In Tax Year 2008/09, I had a total of three different employers:
First one I started work with in 2006 and finished with them in July 2008; second I worked for between July 2008 and 16th March 2009 and then worked through an employment agency between 17th March 2008 and July 2009.
I do not have a P60 form covering Tax Year 2008/09 – how do I obtain a Statement of Earnings for that period?
