BR Tax Code - Emergency Tax Help

Br tax code

Each year millions of pounds gets overpaid when people are mistakenly put on emergency tax codes. Find out if you are on an emergency tax code and how to apply for an emergency tax rebate if you have been overpaying:

What is a BR tax code?
A BR tax code is another name for an emergency tax code. Check your pay slip to see if your tax code is BR.

Are there any other emergency tax codes?
Yes. If your tax code is X, WK1, MTH1 then you also amy be paying emergency tax and be due a tax rebate.

Why am I on an emergency tax code?
There are a number of reasons why you may have been put on an emergency tax code including:

  • You did not give your employer a P45
  • Your employer did not know what tax code to put you on
  • You are working more than one job.

How much tax is paid when you are on an emergency tax code?
If you are on an emergency tax code you will be paying more tax because you will not have received your tax free allowance. If you are on an emergency tax code you will be paying 20% tax on all your income and not getting your allowance which this year is 6475 pounds.

How do I apply to get my emergency tax back?
If you are currently on an emergency tax code, you will get a P60 in April. Once you have this you will be able to claim your emergency tax back. Once you have your P60, send it to your local tax office, together with a P91/P85/P86. Alternatively you can apply online. If you want to apply to claim your emergency tax refund for previous years you can If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact a member of our emergency tax refund team.

TaxFix - Friday, July 23rd, 2010

janet hughes: If you start a new job and do not give your employer a P45, they may not know what tax code to put you on. At the end of the tax year you can claim back any overpayment of tax.

I have retired and received a tax code of 367P.
I understand the 367 but what is the P. Does this mean it just looks at my pay in month and not cumulative pay ? Thankyou

Anonymous - Saturday, July 31st, 2010

The “P” is the 65+ years old allowance.

I am a student and have four part time jobs, the tax office has sent out notifications to all my employers with my tax code but one is syllable taxing me on br code, do I need to contact the tax office or the emplyer as I am in need of my full wage

many thanks

Handsomeginger - Friday, August 27th, 2010

Im 18 and i am earning only 550 a month yet i get taxed 20% why, is this correct?. Although i do have another job where i only earn 200 a month will this affect how much tax i pay. Or am i paying too much?

TaxFix - Friday, August 27th, 2010

Handsomeginger: Your second job is usually on an emergency tax rate (BR). You may be eligible for a tax rebate, it depends on how much you earn during the year and how much you pay in tax. You can use our online tax rebate calculator to check.

I have been working in a bar as casual staff since July and noticed that my employer is paying me £5.75 per hour (I’m 43) and there has been no tax or insurance deductions shown on any of my pay slips. This is my 2nd job, not my main job. First of all is this not 5p below the minimum wage and secondly is it not up to them to sort out my tax code for my 2nd job and not me? Does this mean I’m going to have to pay back tax?

Jaydip - Monday, October 18th, 2010

i have question about tax claim back. I already left
country and i wish to claim my tax back. so how am i claim my tax?

TaxFix - Tuesday, October 19th, 2010

Jaydip: Do you have your P45 that you should have been given by your employer? If so you can apply for your tax rebate here.

Hi, i hope you can help !! I have two part-time jobs, togther they totall 20 hours per week. I have just been taxed on my 2nd job over £100… I thought i’d have to pay emergancy tax, but that shocked me !! What can i do to have my tax code changed. In order not to be paying so much tax? Thanks for your time..

Tax rebate - Tuesday, November 2nd, 2010

HI,

I am a DR and I have been on BR tax code for quite a while. It has recently been changed to proper tax code, but what I am enquiring about is, if I am elegible for tax rebate as with my earnings I should be paying 40% tax and what I read about the BR tax code is that it is calculated at 20%. Can you please advise?

Thank you.

TaxFix - Tuesday, November 2nd, 2010

Tax rebate: If you were paying tax at only 20% and you should have been paying at 40% you may have underpaid tax and owe the Inland Revenue money.

terry - Sunday, November 7th, 2010

As a nurse in the NHS I’ve taken flexible retirement (aged 62) now working 4 days per week rather that 5 and have been hit with a BR tax code of 20% on my wage and pension. Does this mean another battle with system while continuing to work hard ? I thought life might get more straightforward.

TaxFix - Monday, November 8th, 2010

terry: It sounds like you may be being taxed on a BR tax code because you have two sources of income (your pension and your NHS income). As you will be receiving your tax free allowance from your pension your job is taxed at the 20% rate. You may be overpaying tax, you can check at the end of the tax year and claim any repayment due.

I am on BR tax code for doing two jobs at the same time. Does it mean that as long as i will be doing two jobs i will remain on BR tax code and pay 20% tax?

TaxFix - Wednesday, February 23rd, 2011

nick: Did you give your employer a P45 when you started working? At the end of the tax year you will be able to claim back any overpayment of tax.

TaxFix - Wednesday, February 23rd, 2011

Natalie: It will depend on how long it takes for the P45 to be processed. At the end of the tax year you can claim any overpayment of emergency tax by applying here.

I am a ‘young’ pensioner at 63 and have a private pension plus the state pension. Added together I am taxed on some of this. But I also have a part time casual job and I am taxed at source at 20%. But I don’t understand how my tax code is worked out. It ends in BR. I need to check whether I’m being under taxed or over taxed!

So, i gave my P45 to the boss in May the day before i got my payslip and week later i got a letter saying that i will be on BR code from June from the H&M Revenue. I dont understand why after giving my P45 to them why am i still on BR and i am paying too much tax which i dont like. In April and May i was on Tax code OT and in JUne and July i am on Tax code BR. so, i would like to ask u when will i be getting my all of the taxes back and what does that OT means? will i be getting the tax code OT back or is it just the BR? i need some help please.

Janet - Sunday, August 21st, 2011

Why am I on BR tax code when I dont work and I only get a small pension and my stat pension

Tax Fix - Sunday, August 21st, 2011

@Janet

The BR tax code is used when all your income is taxed at the basic rate – currently 20 per cent (most commonly used for a second job or pension).

If you have more than one pension then one of them could all be taxed at the basic rate (BR) depending on the earnings from the other pension.

Your Tax Office should be able to clarify.

nimnom - Thursday, October 20th, 2011

just noticed im on a br taxcode whilst serving with british forces in afghan why is this?

Johnwebster21 - Tuesday, November 1st, 2011

Hi there I have been on a BR tax code since i took two jobs in January which stopped two months later. I have handed in my P45 and spoke to the tax office and they told me that the reason that I was on a BR code was because I had paid too little tax last year. Seeing as it will have been way over a year with me at BR code does that mean that I can claim a rebate?

Katie Eldridge - Thursday, December 1st, 2011

I am on emergency tax and I shouldn’t be. I received my 2nd payslip from my company today and I realised I am being taxed an incredible amount on tax code BR. Please correct this and contact me.

Nick - Wednesday, January 18th, 2012

Have recently got a second job as a carer £4420pa to add to another part time job £6562,44pa. I have two tax codes 470T and 277L. I had not paid tax on my main job til this month where I have been deducted £370.80. But my other employer has also deducted £65.40. (I did get £350 extra payment on the second job as I’d been underpaid for two months). These tax payments seem rather high. The online PAYE calculator works my tax out at £46.94 per month for everything. Do my tax codes sound right?
